========================== Feature Article ======================

Take the Ladder of Success One Rung At A Time

By Edwin Hayward

If you recently visited any of my sites, you may have noticed the

tagline under my &quot;Genki Productions&quot; logo: &quot;Changing the World

One Byte at a Time (TM)&quot;. Arrogant? Maybe... But I have built up

my traffic to over half a million pages a month and 150,000

unique visitors by sticking to this &quot;rule&quot;. In other words, it

really works!

What I do is to slice the problem of getting more traffic very

thinly. I set myself a target for the number of extra page-views

(you can also work with actual visitor numbers, of course!) I

have to find during a month. At the moment, I have picked a

target of 15% a month growth. You can choose any rate you like.

The smaller your current audience, the larger you should make

your target since you only need a few more visitors to have a

dramatic impact on your page-views.

Then I work out the actual numbers. For example, if my site

received 100 page-views per day then by the end of the month I

want it to be averaging 115 page-views per day. I find it helps a

lot to keep a small figure in mind, rather than focusing on the

absolute number of visitors. So I forget about my current visitor

numbers, and say to myself &quot; Now, how am I going to get 15 more

page-views a day?&quot;

Then I work towards the goal in various ways. I check my site's

position in the search engines, I post messages to discussion

groups, I request links from other sites (and if the fit is right

I offer to reciprocate as well), I tighten my pages so that they

load quicker and therefore my visitors are willing to go deeper

into the site, etc. Once I reach the target, I can relax for the

rest of this month and then start thinking about how I am going

to meet NEXT month's target.

This article is reprinted by permission from the PR2 free website

promotion course. The PR2 course is tailored to small business

and personal sites. Learn to promote your site simply,

progressively and effectively. PR2 is at <A HREF="http://www.pr2.com/">http://www.pr2.com/</A>

-- Editor's note: This sounds like a very effective idea to help promote

your site. As this is the time of year when it is standard to make

&quot;resolutions&quot;, it might be a good idea to &quot;resolve&quot; to try to increase your

traffic by, say, 15% a month. I plan on doing that myself this year!

This is one of the articles to be included in the upcoming Unique Promotion

Ideas section at Promotion World. It will be a section containing

interesting, inspiring and most of all unique promotion ideas to get you

thinking of unique ways you could promote your site.

I hope to get the section online later this week, if all goes well. It will

be located at <A HREF="http://www.promotionworld.com/ideas/">http://www.promotionworld.com/ideas/</A>

If you have promoted your site in a unique way, please write and tell me

about it. I may include it in the new section, with a link to your site of

course. <A HREF="mailto:webmaster@promotionworld.com">webmaster@promotionworld.com</A>

This week's quote from the discussion board:

&quot; If you still can't find a decent CGI script, check out

<A HREF="http://www.scriptsearch.com">http://www.scriptsearch.com</A>. They have site search

scripts in Perl, Java, and JavaScript.

They've got a little bit of everything, so you should find what you need

there. Good luck!

====================== Searching With Hayden ====================

Q. Getting listed on some of these search engines is a complicated as

building your website! I wonder if you could help me. My knowledge of all

this is VERY

limited. I've been reading as much as I can about all of it on the web. I

have to admit, it's a bit discouraging.

Anyway, I recently built a website that was supplied free. I used a URL

redirection service for a new URL. When I go to View and click Source, my

meta tag info is now different (and incorrect) than it was with my original

URL. Is this where the search engines go to find the info they need? Can I

assume that if I submit the new URL to the search engines that they will get

the incorrect one instead of the original?

A. When you submit a URL, the search engine will go to the page you enter and

spider and index this page. If the page is using redirection that is HTML based

such as meta refresh or a java app, then the page still gets indexed not the

page that the viewer is redirected to. If, on the other hand, the

redirection is done server side the second page will be indexed. A server

side redirection

will take a request for page A but will deliver page B. In this situation, the

viewer or the Search Engine never see page A so page B is indexed or viewed.

======================== Bits And Pieces =========================

This is a nice program that will submit your site to over 250 FFA pages for

free. However, you probably don't want to use your main email address when

submitting to these, as you will be inundated with thank you emails all

trying to get you to visit again, and then follow up emails. I have taken

out an account at one of the many free email providers for use when

submitting to FFAs.
