Reed Business Launches SchemaLogic SchemaServer to Power www.Kellysearch.com

SchemaServer improves information findability across millions of business and products on Kellysearch

April 26, 2006; 02:27 AM

KIRKLAND, Wash. - SchemaLogic, a leader in business semantics management and integration for Global 5000 companies, today announced that Reed Business, a division of Reed Elsevier, has implemented the SchemaServer business semantic management platform to turbo-charge Kellysearch, the largest business-to-business (B2B) search portal in Europe. SchemaServer manages the centralized and dynamic semantic layer behind the Kellysearch portal's search and content platforms to help drive ongoing search engine optimization. Reed Business selected SchemaServer to improve the quality of data and relevance of search results for the portal's millions of visitors while eliminating the time-consuming and expensive procedures associated with labor-intensive manipulation of taxonomy data.

The Kellysearch B2B search engine is a natural evolutionary successor to Kelly's Business Directory, which was established in the United Kingdom in 1799. The Kellysearch site is built upon a taxonomy of more than 200,000 terms attached to 2 million companies and receives between 20 million and 40 million hits per month.

"Our world-class taxonomy is vital to our ongoing success and an essential component of effective search and search engine optimization strategies," said Jan Altendorff, Kellysearch technical projects director. "However, the huge scale of the taxonomy presented an enormous challenge in terms of ongoing development and maintenance for our team of dedicated taxonomists as the business demanded greater flexibility and rapid integration of new taxonomies. In addition, it was clear that simple hierarchical and drill-down navigation mechanisms would not meet the needs of the increasingly sophisticated site visitors. The SchemaLogic platform was selected to provide our taxonomists with state-of-the-art facilities to support transformation of our taxonomy into an ontology; enabling Kellysearch to deliver highly sophisticated search and navigation functionality."

SchemaServer offers Kellysearch the capability to establish corporate semantics by initially harvesting data from Kellysearch's multiple company and product listings. SchemaLogic then rationalizes the data so that it is established, evolved and distributed throughout Kellysearch. By deploying SchemaLogic's Business Semantics Management solution, variances in naming terminology among companies can be resolved to a common set of terminology, making it easier to match global B2B queries for specific goods and services.

"Our objective is to inform business decisions and connect the right supplier with the right customer. We recognize the need to invest in advanced Web search technologies in order to meet these objectives and best serve a global B2B search market," said Jerry Gosney, managing director Reed Business Information Search. "Deployment of SchemaLogic Enterprise Suite is part of a strategic program of developments that will enable us to provide state-of-the-art search facilities and high-quality search results to our customers."

"Our powerful business semantic management application and its ability to ultimately improve 'findability' can have significant bottom line business impact across an organization," said Jeff Dirks, president and chief executive officer of SchemaLogic. "Kellysearch contains so much information that it was critical to establish a common semantic layer to make searches more effective. Our solution provides Kellysearch with rich and highly scalable taxonomy and ontology modeling and management functionality that will truly help to create a uniform system for storing, managing and searching the portal's company and product information."

"The Kellysearch site serves millions of visitors, thousands of advertisers, and continues to grow," Altendorff added. "SchemaLogic SchemaServer provides us with a flexible and scalable semantic management tool that delivers more consistent, relevant search results for our customers. With better search results, our advertisers will have higher qualified leads, and our search customers will find the information, products and suppliers they need to support and grow their businesses."
