Once you have created your website, the next task is to
"tag" your website with a word or sentence that describes it. If you
are familiar with social bookmarking sites like delicious.com or digg.com, you
will already be familiar with this method of identifying your post with a
search term that people type to find your bookmark. This is the same thing that
is used for finding the right keyword for your website.
Finding the right keyword, is something like getting married.
You are going to be spreading the word around on the Internet via search engine
submissions and directory submissions, just like you would, your partner. On a
serious note, you will not be able to get rid of it quickly if you have the
keyword for a long period of time, as the search engine has already tagged it
to your site. Of course, you can, if you consistently promote your new keyword,
if you want a change.
Now coming back to finding the right keyword. There are many
free tools available on the site. The most popular keyword tools are Word
Tracker and Keyword Discovery Tool.
The difference between both these tools are that Word
Tracker gives you only 100 days data and Keyword Discovery gives you 365 days
of data. WordTracker's data is compiled from the meta search engines
MetaCrawler.com and Dogpile.com which both cover approximately 1% of the entire
search population. Using the WordTracker keywords tool will allow you to tap
the most recent data that these two meta search engines have gathered in their
search logs and these are sent WordTracker.
Keyword Discovery Tool, on the other hand, gives you 365
days worth of data taken from samples of data taken from some search engines
and compiled over a period of time.
For serious keyword researchers, a good tool that I would
recommend is the Nichebot. You can do a
thorough research for your keywords and for a website owner who is serious
about using these words in the long term, it also helps in getting ideas for writing
articles using their LSI deep-digging tool. This tool gives long tail keywords
that people search for and related sentences and related words of a keyword. You can try it out on a trial basis for $1.
Google Adwords
provides a keyword
tool that you can use to search for related words.
When I type in a general word "jeans", here is
what I get:
Seven jeans
Jeans
Wrangler jeans
Designer jeans
Lee jeans
Denim jeans
Womens jeans
These are some of the words that people search in relation
to "jeans". This can be used as content for your website.
If you are a site selling jeans only to women, a keyword that
will catch your attention may be "womens jeans" (notice you don’t put
the apostrophe on "women and "s"). If you drill down further,
you would be able to get a count of how many searches are conducted on that
word "womens jeans".
The next step is to check what the competition is for those
keywords. You can also KEI and ratio of that particular keyword. This data is
particularly useful if you are using Wordtracker.
According to Wordtracker,
KEI compares the number of times the word has appeared in Wordtracker with the
competing web pages. This gives the number of keywords that are most effective
for your campaign.
So if your keyword search for "womens jeans" looks
like this:
100 day count – 44
Predicted daily count – 77
Competition – 263,000
KEI - .01
Ratio – 5977.27
It may not be a good idea to go for this particular keyword
as the KEI is low. What you want is a high KEI.
On the other hand, if you are an Adsense publisher, you want
a word which has a high ratio. So based on whether you are looking for a
keyword for your website or for Adsense, it is
better to select a search term which has a high KEI and a low ratio.
Another popular way is to select a phrase instead
of just a word. The logic behind it is that people don’t just type in a word in
the search box, they type in sentences like "size 14 denim jeans".
Selecting the right keyword is important so take as much
time as you require. There are Seo Firms that do the analysis for you for a small fee. Once you know the keyword is right, you can go ahead and do
the rest of the optimization required to rank a website.
