Because SEO is often a misunderstood process it can be a challenge to sell in times of recession. This is very annoying for an SEO professional as SEO is not just a good idea at these times, it is almost essential for maintaining a flow of business and thus revenue for any company. Partly the way to make sure you get the job of optimising a client’s site lies with educating the client so that they can see the true necessity of the job we do, the need to optimise the website to make effective use of the various means of routing users to the site, the ongoing development and tactics behind SEO and the need for SEO to act as a support for any more traditional marketing and online marketing techniques. This education can often sell a contract without any sales techniques at all but some clients do require a certain amount of extra work to secure a job.

Timing is important in any sales pitch, especially when budgets are being set. In times of recession the end of year budget round up may not produce the usual glut of cash that we used to from the good years we had before the credit crunch, however the need to get rid of certain amounts of cash can still exist and departments are more keen than ever to get as much money from the board as possible next year. SEO is a particularly good product for this extra spend as there is always more that can be done on an existing project to swallow up some spare resource. Good SEO and internet marketing always produces great returns so for any department head it is certainly a better spend than new office furniture.

Possibly the most persuasive argument for a company to concentrate funds on their SEO and online marketing are the recent figures proving not only that people are spending online, but that businesses specialising in online selling are among the few that have actually seen growth, and consistent growth through the  hardest times of the recession. The only way to get ahead in this competitive growth market is to have a more visible website than the competition and the only way to achieve this visibility is with quality SEO work.

SEO Junkies are obsessive about SEO and Search Marketing. We aim to get our client’s websites the greatest possible level of traffic by making sure that they are presented as the most relevant site for all of their search terms.

Title: Selling SEO in a bad economy

February 19, 2010
Comment by CK Web

Great article. I could not agree more regarding the selling of SEO during these times. One thing I have noticed that works is just what the article mentions. Web sites are doing relatively well comapred to brick and morters. The idea of selling on the web is still a mystery to many, so if you can get over the hump or lack of understanding how to do it, this will become the most effective tool for selling SEO now.
