Hand Vs. Mass Submission
When you think of submitting your site to the search
engines, you probably think of one of the many mass
submission programs. You shouldn't.
Sure, they make the job a lot easier. But personally, I think
you can get much better results if you submit to the
eight biggest search engines by hand. Why? Here are some of my reasons:
They are not very specific in how they get your site listed. Think of
Yahoo, with it's hundreds of catagories. They can never get you listed in the
perfect catagory on each directory out there to give you the best results.
They don't do as good a job. For this one, I'm speaking
generally. For example, if I submit my site, and something
happens in the submission process (for instance, it can't
connect to the search engine's server), it probably won't try
again. Also, what if the search engine has changed the page to which
you need to submit?
Some search engines don't accept submissions from the mass
submission programs. Why? Because often they are spam.
So, I recommend that you submit to the top eight search
engines by hand. The next section talks more about that.
After you have submitted to the major search engines by hand and you
then want to use a mass submission program to submit
to the other hundreds of smaller engines, that's fine. It would save
you a lot of time, and probably wouldn't greatly affect your results.
