70% of People Have Never Heard of WordPress

Popular WordPress blog, WPMU.org, did a study of U.S. consumers and found that 70% of them had never heard of the extremely popular CMS, WordPress.

(PRWEB) August 05, 2013 - WPMU, a top resource for premium plugins, themes and information for WordPress users, released the results of a survey July 31, 2013, which some web professionals may find surprising. The poll survey 1,517 people and asked as single question: Have you heard of WordPress?

Results showed that, on average, only 30% of the general population is familiar with WordPress, a content management system that powers nearly 69 million websites around the world (http://en.wordpress.com/stats/) and 52% of the World’s top 100 blogs. The survey, which did not differentiate between sites hosted on WordPress.com and those running self-hosted WordPress installations, showed 25-44 year olds were the most likely to have heard of WordPress. Those in urban areas were also most likely to have heard of the CMS, with a 34.8% "yes" response. The Midwest had a lower than average "yes" response, with only 22% of residents responding that they had heard of WordPress.

Survey Methodology and Accuracy

This survey was written by WPMU and conducted using Google Surveys, July 2013. A white paper released by Google, found that Consumer Surveys are “more accurate” than other Internet panels and can be used as a replacement for traditional methods without sacrificing quality.
